August News - Region 6

Pictured below is the Exchange Club of San Diego along with the National Exchange Club ACE Award winner from San Diego, Javier Cardenas and his mother, Maria Cardenas, who are the two on the right front row.  Javier received the National A.C.E. of the Year Award of $10,000 check for college.   A.C.E. is an acronym for Accepting the Challenge of Excellence. The award recognizes high school students who have overcome difficult times and obstacles, yet still managed to graduate from high school and excel in some area. These students have overcome great physical, emotional or social obstacles, but few receive recognition.

The Exchange Club of San Diego is eleven strong.  Two other men attending the National Convention in La Quinta, CA were not available for this picture but were in attendance.  Kim Lamb, Western Regional Manager is in the center of the picture in the dark gray shirt.  This club sponsored an Sports World Outreach last year and is planning to sponsor another in the San Diego area again this fall.  This club may be small in number but it is mighty in results.  This year they had three district winners of which Javier also won the National ACE award.
We hope to see many more Exchange Clubs bet behind the work of Sports World in other communities.  Mr. Lamb is arranging speaking opportunities in other clubs to share the close connection of Sports World with their CAP (Child Abuse Prevention) funding that can be used for Sports world Outreaches.
Sports world has much to offer community service clubs.  If you are in such a club please contact Mr. Lamb to share the Sports World program with them.
If you have an interest in booking an Outreach this fall please contact Mr. Lamb immediately.  Let him also know if you want to consider one during 2011.

Region 6 - July Update

Region 6 Western Division Blog by Kim Lamb
The first Western Region Sports World Football Camp was held June 29-30 at San Carlos, AZ.  Coach Shawn Pietila along with the help of Benny Ferra and David Reede provided all the local arrangements for the camp.  The two main schools at the camp were from San Carlos and Superior, AZ.  One student attended from Hayden High School and was the first to register online.  Twenty one students participated with the help of six local coaches lead by Rich Garza and Ken Johnson from Sports World.

Currently we have two Outreaches scheduled for the fall of 2010.  I will be calling each team captain who has participated with me last year to get each on the books for this coming school year.  I will also be contacting new team captains in the next few weeks to get them on the schedule as well.
I attended the District Exchange Club in Irvine, CA last month and will be attending the National Exchange Club in La Quinta, CA this month.  Exchange Club of San Diego sponsored one of the three Outreaches held in San Diego area last year.  Exchange Club is committed to CAP “Child Abuse Prevention.”  In 2003 and 2004 Sports World was given the Outstanding Youth Program Award at the National Convention.  With your help we will connect with Exchange Clubs in the Western Region to help sponsor additional Outreaches.  Our San Diego Club had a strong presence at the District Conference and our District will have a strong presents at the National with it located in our region this year.

OUTREACH HIGHLIGHTS by Kim Lamb, Regional Manager

I want to thank everyone in the Western Region who has had a part in making this a great beginning.  I started with Sports World one year ago and we continue to grow the western region back to what it was in the past.  Little had been done since 2007 and in one year working only part time we have had 11 Outreaches, 8 this spring, speaking to over 26,000 students, almost 20,000 this spring.

Dennis Norton has been an awesome partner.  He attended the annual conference in Indianapolis last year and has coordinated 5 of the Outreaches.  .Michelle Hernandez has worked with Dennis on two of these Outreaches helping with the funding, housing and transportation.  We have provided speakers for her new ministry.   Her ministry has provided great opportunities for out Pros to share Christ in the community and see people coming to the Lord.  John Leggat who lead on Outreach in Phoenix in 2009 assisted Dennis with one of his Outreaches with providing one day of speaking assemblies in the Phoenix are and getting the Pro to the airport.  Thanks Dennis for all the miles you traveled and time you spent lining up schools.

Mark Blumenthal has been extremely supportive of helping may first year go well.  Living in the San Diego area we have been able to get together more frequently.  He sponsored one Outreach.  Because of his dad’s health issues and then his passing Roxy Potter from FCA stepped up and took care of helping get schools and transporting the Pro.  Roxy is expecting and will be staying home to start her family.  We were fortunate to have three Outreaches in the San Diego area.  The Exchange Club of San Diego sponsored one of those and Mark took care of the housing of the Pro.  Thanks Mark for all your great ideas and encouragement.

Diane Wiese had two Outreaches.  One was funded by our Board member, Jerry Balswick, and the other she got support on her own.  Diane lined up the schools and transported the Pro.  Thanks Diane being a dependable Team Captain.

My top “A” Team Captain, would go to, Dick Ferris.   Dick had a fully funded Outreach with almost 6,000 students.  He did this by building a team of people in his area to help with various responsibilities.   He had people lining up schools and others finding supporters.  He had another taking care of housing and food for the pro.  He had another lining up drivers to take the Pro around to the schools.  Thanks Dick for a great example to leading the way.

Shane Keeling who has been a team captain in the past came on board and helped put on an Outreach near the end of the semester.  He used some great creativity to get us I the publics eye to make it easier for the next semester.  He made arrangements at the Mall to invite students to meet with the Pro.  He also got the local paper to attend one of the assemblies and place a wonderful write up in the local paper about Sports World and Rich Garza.   Thanks Shane for being so creative.  See the following newspaper link:

I am looking forward to our first summer Football Camp in San Carlos, AZ.  Rich Garza and Ken Johnson will be leading the camp.  Dennis Norton and I will be their to assist and encourage.

It is time to get the fall outreaches on the calendar.  I will be contacting you shortly.  I will be looking to add other to the list above so if you are interested please contact me.

OUTREACH HIGHLIGHTS by Kim Lamb, Regional Manger
Schools:
Many of you are getting to know Stacey Stamper as you connect with her on lining up your schools.  Now is the time to get your mailers sent to the schools for the fall assemblies, so as soon as you get your date set contact Stacey with the key cities where you want fliers mailed.  Keep her informed of your schedule so she can keep you scheduled assemblies updated.
Arizona:
Dennis Norton completed an outreach in Yuma, AZ with Steve Grant.  This city is becoming aware of the impact our Pros can have in their community to help young people make better choices.  We are finding many business connections to help with future assemblies in the schools.

The last night of this Outreach Steve spoke in the community of Ajo which Michele Hernandez set up.  She has been working with Dennis to have our Pro speak in smaller communities where they are not as privileged as large cities to have our quality of speakers address their communities.  Michele did this last fall with the San Carlos Outreach in Superior and plans the same for Eloy this fall.

Dennis just finished the Yuma Outreach in mid April and is leading another in San Carlos the first of May with Mike Cobb.  Dennis is also working with people in San Carlos to have a summer Football Camp, June 29-30.

California:
The Exchange Club of San Diego had its first Outreach.  Ken Johnson got to speak to over 3,000 students.  As he spoke to an audience of 1,000 students you could have heard a pin drop as Ken shared stories to help these students rethink their attitudes toward drugs.  I am hoping more Exchange Clubs will support Outreaches in other cities.  One of there main themes in exchange is to prevent child abuse and our speakers address the topics that help prevent many abuses teens face.  In 2003 and 2004 the National Exchange Club awarded Sports World for its contribution in this area.  I am hoping we can revitalize our involvement with Exchange Clubs.

The Exchange Club had a special program “One Nation Under God” at Mimi’s Restaurant in Mira Mesa.  Ken shared some of the experiences from speaking in the schools and spoke to the importance of being a nation that depends on God.  The club was very pleased with what was accomplished by Ken and Sports World that week.

Diane Wiese just completed her spring Outreach with Steve Grant. Diane found some supporters on her own and worked with Stacey to line up schools and was able to have a great Outreach in her area.  Diane works for FCA and realizes the value of working with Sports World to bring our Pros into the schools she serves to further motivate and challenge the students in her area.

OUTREACH HIGHLIGHTS
Associate:
Kendra Hall has served well with us since I started working with Sports World last summer.  Her expertise in designing publications such as the one you are reading has moved her into the Marketing Department of Sports World.  Thank you Kendra for your service with us these past several months.  My new Associate is Stacey Stamper who is also the Receptionist when you call the main office.  She has been working diligently helping us line up schools.  She is as pleasant to work with as was Kendra.  Welcome aboard Stacey.

Team Captains:
Mark Blumenthal’s father, David, passed away recently with a great memorial celebration at the Blumenthal Sports Center at the Coronado High School.  Mark has been a faithful supporter of Sports World bringing Pros in to speak at schools.  With Mark involved with family caring for his dad, we appreciate Roxy Potter from FCA working with him to help line up schools and drive the Pro around.

Dick Ferris had a fantastic Outreach that was fully funded and about 6,000 students in Assemblies.  Dick started by gathering a team of people together.  One took care of housing and meals, another took care of transportation, others took care of lining up schools and they all pitched in with a donation and then found others to do the same so they ended up with $4,500 to fully pay for the Outreach.  This is what we refer to as a Team A.  Thanks Dick for a perfect example of how to do an Outreach.

Dennis Norton has been driving all over Arizona conducting business and setting up Outreaches.  He is the first in our area to try and set up a Summer Camp.  Dennis in Arizona and Diane Wiese in Turlock, CA who both had Fall Outreaches have been working to have an Outreach every semester and are making great strides in accomplishing this.

I want to thank Dennis and Dick for sharing in our February Training Seminar and for Devon McDonald being our Keynote Speaker.  Some of you were not able to be with us but it was a great time of networking and encouragement.  I want to thank all who made an effort to be here with us in San Diego.

Kim Lamb's Bio:

Kim Lamb grew up in a small town environment in the Midwest learning the business world working in his father’s Farm Store. This business experience has provided a series of opportunities throughout his career. He has a Christian Education degree, BA, B.Th. and a Master of Divinity (major in Christian Education) degree and has ministered in seven churches with an emphasis on Christian Education.

Before moving to California, Mr. Lamb was active in the Terre Haute, IN Exchange Club where he was introduced to Sports World. Their Sports World Team Captain, Ken Warner, and Mr. Lamb have remained good friends. It was through Mr. Warner that Mr. Lamb learned that Sports World was seeking a Regional Manager in the California area.

Mr. Lamb has a deep love for educating children and has spend his life influencing and providing healthy learning opportunities for them. He taught elementary school in the Chicago Public Schools for ten years. Having seen what an effective impact Sports World Athletes are having on today’s students, he is delighted to join the Sports World Team.

Mr. Lamb is in the process of contacting previous Team Captains and Team Members to plan future Outreach opportunities where former Professional Athletes can share their personal life story with students, challenge them to make better choices and encourage them with a message of hope. Mr. Lamb is also establishing new contacts with Exchange Clubs, Ministerial Organizations, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Juvenile Officers, Coaches, School Officials, etc to develop new Outreach opportunities.

Mr. Lamb encourages anyone in the western states interested in impacting the children in their community to contact him. Together we can facilitate opportunities for our children to make better choices.
